Dorchester County recognizes Coosaw Pointe
Summerville, SC - On May 7, 2008, the Dorchester County Council unanimously approved the naming of Coosaw Pointe, the area around the intersection of Dorchester Road and Ashley Phosphate Road.

The name Coosaw Pointe was chosen because the Coosaw Indians lived on the Coosaw River which runs through this area. Since all of this area is in the county, the local businesses and schools banded together to request the resolution from the county.

The next step is to formally get the support from City of North Charleston as part of these businesses also reside in the city limits. North Charleston is supportive of the small business community and is favorably responding to their request. This is the first step in building a community that has local recognition and family events. The businesses will benefit as well with cooperative marketing efforts and purchasing benefits.

Joey Peters from Wonder Wash is quoted as saying, “this gives us a vehicle to do so many great things for the community.” Joey hosts many charity events and sees this as a positive for the local residents. Charles Ferguson of SouthCoast Community Bank has generously given the group a place to meet and has been a leader in the effort to enhance the community.

The group of interested businesses grew from 6 to 32 in three short weeks. In this small area, there are four schools. The businesses plan to partner closely with the schools. They would like to organize some family events around some of the holidays and bring a farmers market to the area. The next meeting for the up and coming Coosaw Pointe Business Association is 8:30 AM, Tuesday, May 13th at the Chick-fil-a.
