May is Better Sleep Month get a good nights sleep

Sleep is vital to your health! Numerous studies reveal lack of sleep translates to several health problems including increased risk for heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and stroke. Blood pressure falls during sleep, so less of it stresses the nervous system. Sleep also decreases calcium deposits in the arteries and protects from the stress hormone cortisol. With all the economic stress these days, sleep can be a remedy to cope and is essential for optimal function. "Sleep debt" can stress relationships, health and daily functions by causing irritability and low energy. Studies have shown that more sleep can boost athletic performance and solidify memories.

Follow these tips to improve the quality and quantity of your sleep:

  • Go to bed and rise the same time each day (including weekends). This helps your body develop a sleep rhythm.
  • Reduce or avoid as many drugs as possible. Many medications, prescription and over-the-counter, affect sleep.
  • Avoid nicotine and caffeine. These stimulants can keep you awake at night.
  • Bathe before bed. Body temperature then falls at bedtime, facilitating sleep.
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark, quiet and comfortable.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Develop relaxing bedroom routine.
